This guy's story is all too common, but one part of it that's not mentioned is what happened to his 6th Amendment right to counsel from the time of his very first court date? Seems that competent counsel could have prevented this horror from the beginning, and it's a fact that right to counsel failures are systemic all across the country, especially in the context of indigent people being brought up on petty and even unconstitutional charges.
