(So we don’t mean to keep making call outs for donations… but sometimes there is no real other choice but community support when our systems are set up to fail the poor.)
We talked with Nasheyra and her family (including a 14 year old daughter) yesterday who were living in their bus and the City of Aurora towed their bus and all their property inside based on a license plate technicality that was a $40 charge. They gave them no choice to pay the charge, but rather just towed their home and property leaving them with nothing. An outreach worker in Aurora was able to get them in a hotel for 2 days, but that is it.
The adult son uses the bus to drive to work every day and now with no vehicle he can’t get to work (as there is no bus that goes even close). If he loses his job the whole family will have no income.
With the complications of getting vehicles out of impound, their best option right now is to rent a Uhaul to get their property out of the bus and then buy a different bus once they have money coming from family on Tuesday. The Uhaul will cost about $250 for these days, plus gas. If they also had enough money to extend their hotel stay until Tuesday, another $280, they would not have to live in the Uhaul.
We are continuing to push on the City of Aurora and family service providers for more help for this family, but as that is not coming through so far, it seems the best bet for this family is community support!
This family’s vehicle was towed because of targeting poor people living in their vehicles. We should not have systems that allow police to target poor families living in vehicles and take their homes, all their property, and their transportation to work based on their own hate and discrimination! No More Poverty Tows!@$
