Yesterday, January 8th, City Council passed the No Freezing Sweeps Bill in a 9-4 vote!!! We are soooo grateful to bill sponsors and all who voted yes to move this forward to final reading next week!!
There was much discussion about weighing dangers and looking for every way to make sure the City can still sweep people in the winter… but ultimately in this vote, the cry of the people saying “stop moving us and taking our stuff and forcing us to freeze/getsick/lose limbs/die when it is freezing cold” won out!!
It is important to note that two of the votes last night were tentative – they may be asking for amendments or change their vote. We need everyone to email your City Council representative before next Tuesday and ask for their support! Use this link to easily email your council representative https://secure.afsc.org/a/ask-city-council-save-lives
The final hearing on this bill will be Tuesday January 16th, not Monday due to MLK day.
We will rally before the hearing in front of City Hall Tuesday January 16th at 2:30pm and the hearing will start at 3:30pm on the 4th floor.
See you all there!
onwards towards NO MORE FREEZING SWEEPS!!!
