The link below is a Request of ‘Wood Street Commons’ to friends and supporters of Oakland’s unhoused communities to “Sign-On” to a Solidarity Letter objecting to the City’s questionable and likely illegal plan to destroy the unhoused communities of Wood Street on January 9, “Electoral Inauguration Day.”
Stand with wood street – THE WOOD STREET COMMONS
Presently, the Administration is under orders of the City Council, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), and Federal Court Decrees to “cease the removal or dislocation of unhoused people unless reasonable alternative housing or accommodations” are made available to the unhoused before they are displaced.
Appx 200 to 300 people remain unhoused at Wood Street encampments. Conversely, the City has NO alternative accommodations, or functional re-housing alternatives that meet the guidelines for removal of the unhoused. So … Why is the Administration rushing to displace houseless people in the midst of torrential rainstorms, howling winds, and the freezing cold of the death of Winter ??? ,,, And, immediately before Mayor-Elect Sheng Thao assumes office ????
