It has now been 16 days since Keith was left with both a broken knee and ankle following an electric scooter accident. After being slighted and denied proper medical care and attention for weeks, he went to an orthopedic appointment today at Denver Health to discuss treatment. Once again, he’s been told to let his serious injuries heal on their own. His fears of lifelong mobility issues are growing as he returns to the shelter with no respite options available, his disappointment and pain felt as he stated the hospital visits were “a waste of time.” Somehow, having suffered a heart attack due to an enlarged heart, and sustaining multiple broken ribs, knocked out teeth, internal bleeding the size of half a basketball on his hip, and now multiple breaks along his left leg that bind him to a wheelchair are not considered serious enough injuries to earn a safe space to recover. In Keith’s world, you don’t get the same quality medical care and right to heal as you’ve been told you should.
Still, the fight continues. While he could remain bitter and let his situation get the best of him, Keith has instead been spending his downtime researching options for people in his position, in his same world, so that they would be able to create their own safety and respite. After all, if he had a safe warm place to stay, he says he’d have become a homebody, and likely not been exposed to a lot of the environmental risks that injured him in the first place, let alone prevent him from receiving medical treatment thereafter due to the high risk of infection. He has been discussing with HAND how he wants to help community members like him attain RVs/campers in need of repair and support them throughout the repair process so that they can finally find independence and tranquility in the form of their own home.
