With signal digit cold here this weekend and beyond, houseless people need gear to survive! Please donate items to help people survive this cold!!
Order from our wish list here https://tinyurl.com/hand-campaign-5280
Top items needed right now:
-Hand and foot warmers
-Gloves
-Hats
-Warm socks
-Coats
-Sleeping Bags
-Tarps
-Tents
If you have clothes or other items to donate, you can bring those items to Mutual Aid Monday on Monday from 4-7pm at 14th and Bannock in front of City Hall.
Most importantly, helping houseless people you see directly is the best! Here are some things you can do when you see someone who may be houseless and cold:
-Give some money they can use to go to a restaurant or somewhere to stay warm or use however they need it.
-Give handwarmers, gloves, hats, other gear, food and water, or bus tickets you have with you.
-Give them information about the emergency shelters and offer to give them a ride if possible – find info here https://denvergov.org/Government/Agencies-Departments-Offices/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory/Department-of-Housing-Stability/Resident-Resources/Find-Shelter
-Pay for them to stay in a hotel for a few days (shelters just are not a viable option for some people for many reasons) – help them get there and get checked in, and give them some extra money for food.
Remember to listen to what people say and want – you may not understand the reasons but they probably have reasons.
In spite of Mayor lies that unsheltered homelessness is decreasing, more and more people are living on our streets and now facing unprecedented enforcement just for being in public. Last winter we surveyed 97 houseless people who were living outside in the middle of an extreme cold front, and 100% of them had been swept in the cold under 32degrees!#$ Sweeps continue and in the cold sweeps create massive harm and even death. We demand an end to this inhumanity!$%
