Back in December 2024 we made a post about a couple living in their RV who have been harassed by police non-stop for years and then suffered a hit and run leaving their RV and trailer seriously damaged with no real investigation and no insurance payment for the damage. After this, police harassment only escalated. (Watch videos here and here (this one is video of police towing an RV an hour before the posted time, and almost 2 days before the legal time which requires 48 hours instead of 2 hours for anyone who is living in their vehicle) or more videos on their youtube channel here.
After contacting the City about this, the City did put them up in a hotel for a couple weeks. We in HAND had just recently met with the City about a planned RV resident intervention initiative where the City stated the plan was to move people from RVs into rapid rehousing and buy off their RV. We in HAND spoke with the City about implementing this plan for this couple. Initially we thought this is what would happen.
But instead, after a couple weeks in the hotel, the couple was told they needed to go to Radisson to connect with a case manager and get into rapid rehousing. The couple objected sharing all the reasons staying at an All In site would not work for them. One of these reasons is that they still have their RV and need to be able to park it where it will not be towed. To address this need, we got the City to state in email that they can park their RV on Radisson property (in spite of push back from Radisson leadership).
So in spite of all the reasons they made clear the All In sites are not good for them, they went to Radisson. But upon arriving, staff did not let them park their RV on property and further banned the man in this couple from staying in the Radisson. The woman, who depends on her partner as a caregiver due to health problems, was left to stay there alone while her partner stayed outside in the cold in the RV parked on the public street nearby.
She stayed there at Radisson specifically because she had been told this was the way she and her partner would get rapid rehousing because, since Radisson was closing, all housing support was focused on these residents. But after about 2 months of staying there at the time she should have been moving into housing, they transferred her with no notice to Doubletree instead of housing!@# And upon arriving at Doubletree they have also not been allowed to park their RV on property, forcing the caregiver to continue to live out in the RV.
Upon moving into Doubletree she was instructed to meet with a new case manager in the first two weeks, but after multiple attempts she has not been able to meet with the case manager even when showing up to set meeting times.
It is important to also understand that this woman has serious health problems requiring regular doctor’s visits and making her dependent on her partner (who is stuck out in the RV) for assistance.
This couple needs real housing! And no more broken promises.
- The City needs to follow through on the planned RV intervention initiative (and what this couple was told) and move this couple into housing, not All In hotel shelter.
- This should include the City buying off this couple’s RV as was the Cities original planned initiative.
- As long as they, and any RV dwellers, are staying at an All In site, they need to be allowed to park their RV on property.
When you hear the City claiming they are moving folks right into housing, or they are providing wrap-around services at All In sites, or they are supporting RV residents, note this couple’s experience and second guess if what the City is saying is true…
