Party Background Info:
Come celebrate 35 years of unhoused writers and poets taking control of their narratives in San Francisco. The year was 1989, and San Francisco was in a state similar to the one it is today. There was a president in office who refused to acknowledge the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the economy wasn’t looking too hot, leaving Downtown office towers empty. Who did the mainstream media decide to blame? If you’ve been paying attention this year, you know the answer.

So, a group of unhoused organizers, writers, and poets decided it was time to take control of their narrative, and the rest is history. Street Sheet is a San Francisco institution and is the Nation’s most extended continuously published street paper.

For 35 years, the Street Sheet team, comprised of unhoused San Franciscans, challenged constant misinformation about life on the street, rhetoric that still permeates mainstream and social media today. That’s a huge feat considering the amount of money our little street paper is up against. That level of strength calls for a party!

Wednesday, December 11th. Join us at ElRio for a night of honoring Street Sheet alumni and the face of Street Sheet, our veteran vendors who you’ve been buying copies for over three decades. Come through and secure yourself an exclusive Street Sheet 35th Anniversary tee, or grab a copy of Paul Boden’s book, House Key’s Not Handcuffs: Homeless Organizing, Art and Politics in San Francisco and Beyond. This is the perfect resource if you wanted a detailed account of Street Sheet’s early days and what the movement looked like 35 years ago. The book comprises essays and articles from the early days to this decade.

We’ll share stories, dance to some music guaranteed to slap, courtesy of DJ MaDRE, enjoy food and drinks, and offer opportunities to learn how to organize with The Coalition on Homelessness and subscribe to Street Sheet! so you remain up to date with how your unhoused neighbors are fairing in 2024 San Francisco.

The recent decision by the Denver City Council not The recent decision by the Denver City Council not to fund shelters for unhoused families has significant implications for the community. This action not only jeopardizes the safety of vulnerable children but also raises critical questions about local governance and social responsibility. We must advocate for housing justice and support policies that protect the rights of all community members. #HousingJustice #CommunityAdvocacy #SocialResponsibility #Denver #Unhoused
