Oakland, CA. Wood Street Commons 2nd Annual Solidarity Bike Ride to Sac-“Homeless Helping Homeless”

September 25, 2023 by Jonathan Leave a Comment

Announcing the Wood Street 2nd Annual Bike Ride to Sacramento from Oakland! We are asking for the community’s support!

Dear Wood Street Commons Supporters,

All of you are receiving this because you signed onto our letter of support in the past year! We received 788 signatures during that time in the winter of 2022 through the WSC’s evictions in March and April of this year. It was a devastating several months of evictions, trauma and loss and continues to be for many Oaklanders with the continued City of Oakland sanctioned sweeps!

But as many of you know, we are still here, despite the city’s efforts to eliminate our communities one tent at a time! We continue with our organizing, planning events, and feeding and clothing our displaced communities at our new Wood Street Community popup currently nearest 24th Street on Wood Street. Come Visit!

THE BIKE RIDE 🚴🏿‍♀️
Members of our Wood Street community and supporters will bike 100 miles to Camp Resolution in Sacramento on Friday, September 29, 2023.

Last year for the first bike ride, the WSC community supported Camp Resolution in regaining control of a parking lot, which Sacramento organizers were able to turn into a stable solution for homelessness. Read this recent article about Camp Resolution.

On Monday, October 2nd, the Wood Street residents plan (🤞🏽🙏🏽) to speak with Assemblywoman Mia Bonita and members of representative Nancy Skinner’s office to advocate for a solution to homelessness.

YOUR SUPPORT
We are asking for your support in fundraising for our trip this year.
$2K—We need funds to purchase our community van to be used as our support vehicle for supplies and people, this trip and afterwards. This van was graciously on loan by an advocate during evictions and served the community in so many valuable ways: Getting folks to their appointments with social workers, doctors, the market, community actions, city council meetings, etc.

$400-600—We also need to raise money for gas for the van and several support vehicles, tbd.

$2-2.5K (est.)—The rest would be for food for 4 days, (numbers unconfirmed) kitchen supplies for cooking, water, first aid supplies, camping tents, sleeping bags, pads, as well as bike supplies and some still need bikes, so purchasing used bikes if we can’t get bikes donated. This Growing list of Needs gives you an idea of what’s needed.

We figured if each of you on this mailing donated at least $6 each, we could make our goal today! Please donate today at: GoFundMe and please share with others in your networks!

AND THANK YOU to those of who have donated already for this campaign and past campaigns as well as for the multitude of non-monetary ways in which many of you have shown up for this community in the last months and years, really!! ❤️✊🏽

“We appreciate you all!” — John Janosko, Wood Street Community
