Yesterday was the quarterly Homeless Advisory Meeting – a meeting the City officials are required to host from the Lyall v Denver lawsuit where City leaders have to listen to the homeless community.
Our HAND outreach team turned out about 50 houseless people to the meeting yesterday! Houseless and formerly houseless people spoke of the failure of the ‘homeless system’ to address our housing need, the need for bathrooms and water when stuck downtown with no house or money, the trauma of sweeps losing property and privacy, the problems with vouchers that don’t compete on the housing market, and much much more. You can watch the full livestream here.
The City heard person after person living on the streets and in shelters share how the City’s approach to homelessness does not work and how instead we should be supporting people where they are at and opening real quality housing.
Together our voices are louder.
