Portland, OR. ** Urgent ** Support of Hamlet 33 Requested!

June 23, 2022 by Jonathan Leave a Comment

Dear Hamlet 33 Supporters,

Hamlet 33 is a grassroots community supported group of Concordia residents who have coexisted with neighbors for more than two years.  Despite this working “tiny village” model, the City presses on to continue inhumane sweeps at the cost of the medical and mental health of the Concordia neighborhood economically disadvantaged residents.

We are highlighting our effort to fight against the sweep and correct the false narrative that leads the public to believe that the City’s offered “shelter” actually involves a form of supported transitional housing, which it does not.  This allows the housed to sleep well at night while the least fortunate members of our community are being traumatized and destabilized over and over.

Yesterday, many of you took actions to support Hamlet 33 (at NE 33rd & Lombard).

It’s helping.

IF you haven’t contacted the Mayor’s office yet to voice your opposition to sweeping this community supported camp —Please take 5 minutes today and make a call:

·       Mayor Wheeler General Number: 503-823-4120
·       Skyler Brocker-Knapp (Senior Policy Advisor to Mayor Wheeler): 503-865-6957

Or send an email to:

Message:

Dear Mayor Wheeler,

I’m writing to ask your office to remove Hamlet 33 at NE 33rd and Dekum from the sweep list.

This is a community supported camp with over 30 supporters actively working to ensure the sanitary and safe living conditions for its 8 residents.

It’s not too much to ask for your office to let the community try to save the lives of 8 members of our the community who are MEDICALLY FRAGILE, BIPOC, and LGTBQIA+.  We are doing this because we are compassionate neighbors trying to make a difference.

Help us help them by leaving them alone until SUPPORTED Transitional Housing options become available.  Overnight emergency shelters DO NOT COUNT as appropriate housing options.

Sincerely,

YOUR NAME, RESIDENT of X Neighborhood, Voter, Hamlet 33 Supporter

Other ways to support:

1) Bring a sign and chair to the camp today to show support for #stopthesweeps

2) We need to find wheels and axles for the tiny house at Hamlet 33.

3) Venmo or PayPal @KHandaly or PayPal ZoraBHess@gmail.com

Call or text Keri Handaly 503-734-5604 or email if you have leads for the wheels and axles!
