Denver, CO. Support HB22-1314 before April 7th! Protect Against Vehicle Towing Abuse

April 2, 2022 by Jonathan Leave a Comment

Support Protections Against Vehicle Towing Abuse

Ask Colorado State Committee members to support HB22-1314 Towing Carrier Nonconsensual Tows Bill before it is head on April 7th at 1:30pm

A bill is going to the State legislature which would protect against a number of issues arising from vehicle towing where towing companies and impound lots are making masses of money and poor people are losing their vehicles.

Much gratitude to the Colorado Eviction Defence Project, 9to5 Colorado, Towards Justice, and other groups who brought this bill about based on hearing from poor people who suffered from these towing abuses.

This bill has a long list of protections but here are some that would have a positive impact for people living in their vehicles who frequently face unjust towing.

  • Lowers fees for towing
  • Prohibits charging storage fees for days your vehicle is not stored
  • Allows the owner to retrieve property from their vehicle at the storage lot
  • Prohibits towing for expired registration tags, in most cases

Over the past two weeks we gathered input from 22 people living in their vehicles about issues with towing. The feedback we gathered shows widespread need for these and more protections.

20 said lots should “Reduce the cost of getting a vehicle out of impound”

19 said that lots should “Allow the owner to retrieve their property from their vehicle before towing or in towing lot”

We encourage you to contact the Business Affairs and Labor committee and ask them to vote YES on HB22-1314!

The hearing is set for April 7th 2022 at 1:30pm at the State Capitol room HCR 0112

If you have personal direct experience with any of the towing issues named in this bill please contact us.

Read this great article by Colorado Eviction Defense Project and Towards Justice who are leading this bill to learn more about the horrors of current towing practices.

To see all the input we gathered these past 2 weeks from people living in their vehicles on towing issues, see the attached sheet. This can give some ideas for further protections needed.

The recent decision by the Denver City Council not The recent decision by the Denver City Council not to fund shelters for unhoused families has significant implications for the community. This action not only jeopardizes the safety of vulnerable children but also raises critical questions about local governance and social responsibility.
