On Friday, February 11, 6:30pm, the NOlympics LA coalition will hold a Rally Against Stadium-driven Displacement and Militarized Mega-events outside the “Super Bowl Experience” at LA’s Convention Center. The Services Not Sweeps Coalition will be there to denounce the sweeps, continued displacement, and increased policing and criminalization of our communities.
We want a city that serves working-class Angelenos — not a city for sale to investors and tourists. Mega-events like Super Bowl LVI and the LA 2028 Olympics do not benefit working-class Angelenos. On the contrary, they accelerate the displacement of housed and unhoused tenants, and intensify the violent policing, criminalization, and banishment of street vendors, sex workers, immigrants, and low-income Angelenos of color.
Statement from the Services Not Sweeps Coalition: Sweeping encampments and displacing unhoused residents are the same strategies politicians use any time a major event comes to LA, whether it’s the Superbowl or the Oscars or the Olympics. They use cops and criminalization to sweep away the evidence of their failure to address LA’s affordable housing crisis. It’s harmful and ineffective, and right now, in the middle of a pandemic, it’s even more deadly than it otherwise would be.
Our displacement is NOT your entertainment!
