We are planning a STOP THE SWEEPS car demonstration tomorrow from 12:30-1:30, we will be driving around Medford Police station and Medford City Hall making as much noise as well can. The goal is to bring media attention to sweeps that are occurring on Thursday. Monday it was 117º, the hottest it’s ever been in Medford. With dangerous heat and the city’s own inclement weather shelter open, Medford Police issued eviction notices to 12 camps along the Bear Creek Greenway. This is immoral and irresponsible. It could even be deadly.
The Prohibited Camping ordinance the city uses to evict these camps, includes a subsection that allows the city to make exception to enforcement “for severe weather events”, and yet the City is refusing to follow its own ordinance. Sweeps force people to haul their belongings, often by foot or bike, long distances and that is a dangerous activity in this weather. How many people must die of exhaustion or exposure before the city recognizes the humanity or its unhoused residents?
If you can please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, June 30th. Meet between 12:15-12:30 at Central High School parking lot on corner of Whitman and Monroe, across from Maslow Project building. SHOW UP! If you have time, tape signs to your cars! See you soon!
