SWEEPS this week began on Tuesday 4/27/21 at Arkins Court between 31st and Denargo. Approximately 30 people were traumatically displaced weeks before the final re-zoning meeting for the empty piece of land that the camp bordered. The piece of land is owned by Denargo, LLC.
On Thursday SWEEPS continued at Logan from 17th st.to 19th st. Approximately 15 people were traumatically displaced. EHS workers began before 6:30am and their bobcat ripped apart a man’s tent when he went to buy cigarettes. He returned two minutes later to find his home destroyed, and his blankets and other items in a puddle and strewn through the street. He openly wept. We, along with other mutual aid folks were able to give him a tent, tarp, sleeping bag, blanket, comforter. A volunteer took all of his wet linens home to wash and redistribute.
SWEEPING people doesn’t work. Homelessness ends with housing. While that housing is being procured we need real on the ground solution. We need parameters for unsanctioned encampments. We need trash and sanitation (places to pee and poop) services and a pathway to safe, accessible and affordable housing for all. We march Onward towards Rights, Dignity and Housing…
