SWEEPS this week began on Tuesday and Wednesday with 22nd and Stout Street, including portions of Park Avenue West, Champa, California and Broadway.
This camp continues to re-form no matter how many ties it is SWEPT proving that SWEEPING people does not work!! This time we saw the fencing pushed out even further, blocking ADA access and endangering pedestrians and motorists alike. Most disturbing was a housed resident on Stout who verbally attacked and harassed unhoused residents but also EHS staff and other city workers. A private contractor moved in and placed large boulders in much of this area. By the next day, tents were starting to re-establish in the same area. Approximately 75-80 residents were traumatically displaced during this SWEEP.
SWEEPS continued on Thursday April 15th in the areas of 5th and Quivas, 5th and Raritan Way, and 6th and Osage. This SWEEP occured at the border of police districts 1 and 3. There was an overwhelming amount of police presence for such a small encampment. District 1 officers were adamant about camp residents not crossing over to “their” district. Approximately 15 people were traumatically displaced in that SWEEP.
We fight onward towards Rights, Dignity and Housing…
