Many thanks for following up with us and for sharing this information. We will take this to mean that the threat of a sweep to this individual is no longer outstanding given that the person who resides at the campsite complied with officer requests. Please let us know if you find anything to the contrary.
That said, when police “suggest” someone move, that is harassment, given the power imbalances at play in addition to the systemic criminalization and harassment of those without homes from various faucets of the Portland Police and city, as well as previous trauma. This practice of informally sweeping people needs to end immediately. The police are agents of the state and are subjected to the laws and sweeps moratorium just as other agents of the state are. We recognize that police often do not respect people’s rights, and instead opt to do whatever they please, and this is another instance of that. Sweeps need to stop now. We are saddened but not surprised by City Hall’s response to downplay what is happening here.
