Good afternoon all,
I hope this message finds you well. Thank you for the commitment each of you has expressed to standing up for the rights of our unsheltered brothers and sisters.
Next Monday November 26th at 3:00 pm U.S. District Judge Haywood Gilliam will rule whether Oakland’s use of sweeps is an unconstitutionally cruel and unusual punishment when the unsheltered folks have no where else to go.
Prior to the election community folks came together and stopped the planned evictions near Lake Merritt. This was the first time an eviction was stopped using people power.
Mayor Schaaf waited until Wednesday November 7th, the day after she was reelected, to serve 72 hour notice to our allies at the Housing and Dignity Village in East Oakland. Our allies successfully filed for a temporary restraining order to stop the city. This was the first time an eviction was stopped by an order of the court.
Monday the court will hear oral arguments and rule on whether the city can move forward with the eviction.
We need to turn out en masse to send a message to the court.
Security at the federal court house is strict. Please arrive early and bring photo ID.
