Wood Street Feature Film Update!

July 1, 2025 by Jonathan Leave a Comment

Dear Wood Street Friends & Family:

We have some important updates about a special film that’s being made in collaboration with our community. Filmmaker and journalist Caron Creighton has been working with us for the past 3 years on a feature documentary, called “Wood Street,” by following our community as we battled with the city of Oakland to maintain our homes at 1707 Wood Street. The film follows our experiences attending city council meetings, trying to connect with former mayor Sheng Thao, and taking the city to court to try to stop the eviction of our long-term community.

This intimate film centers on John and LaMonté—two of Wood Street’s resident leaders—who helped organize our community in the face of displacement, addiction, and a failing social system. Showing the Wood Street story through their eyes is a powerful testament to community resilience, solidarity, and the right to remain.

The film has gotten support from the Sundance Institute, SF Film, Bay Area Video Coalition, the Berkeley Film Foundation, and others, but we need help in this final push. Our ask for you: Would you support us in finishing this project?
Caron Creighton has just launched a crowdfunding page, where you can find out more about the film and our plans to use it as a tool to help create a positive and empowering narrative shift around homelessness. The goal is to raise $25k to cover post-production. That includes color correction, sound design, and hiring a composer to create an original score. We’re hoping you can help us reach our goal, because the first week of a crowdfunding campaign is critical–

There are a number of ways you can help:
• EMAIL 3 friends who might love this film. Below, We’ve included a draft email you can adapt, in case it’s helpful.
• SHARE about the film on social media! Attached to this email is an image you can share, and we’ve included a sample caption below as well.
• Another way is to click FOLLOW at the top of our crowdfunding page – totally free, but slightly annoying as you have to make a Seed&Spark account first.
• Make a DONATION of any amount – super quick and easy! Donate Here

We will also be hosting a fundraiser party and work-in-progress screening on July 16 at the Oakstop space in Oakland, starting at 6 pm. So mark your calendars and be sure to come out and see what we’ve been working on.

They say “the revolution will not be funded.” And it’s true. Those in power currently rely on vast amounts of money to orchestrate their influence. We are organizing more and more PEOPLE into this movement to bring down systemic oppression and build a more just society. We are inherently PEOPLE-POWERED.
