It seems we have two local Senators, Ashby and Cabaldon, who could use our encouragement to shore up their support for SB634 — a bill that protects from criminal penalties and fines those outreach workers, street ministries, housing navigators, and so many others who offer support to those surviving on California’s streets and open spaces. Check out the attached fact sheet related to the bill!
Let me be clear, we should not have to fight for this, it should not be controversial. People are doing invaluable, lifesaving work every day and unfortunately, even here in Sacramento, we’ve seen law enforcement interference and criminalization of this desperately needed support. Our local state electeds must step in to help the helpers by supporting SB634, especially as state funding for local emergency shelters is at risk and we may see an increase in the number of folks experiencing unsheltered homelessness (another good reason to call your legislators!).
If you are in either Ashby’s district (Sacramento) or Cabaldon’s (West Sacramento, Sonoma County) hearing from you this week may be the difference in encouraging your Senator to vote in support! Contact info below!
Ashby’s Office – (916) 651-4008, Cynthia Weber is the person to talk to if the senator is not available themselves. You can also send an email, cynthia.weber@sen.ca.gov!
Cabaldon’s Office – (916) 651-4003, Maeve Parasol is the person to talk to if the senator is not available themselves. Their email is maeve.parasol@sen.ca.gov!
Is this something you are passionate about and you want to do more? Are you impacted directly by these issues? Try to schedule an in-person meeting with your senator! And feel free to respond to this email if you want more information or to collaborate!!
In solidarity,
