Hey Folks, here’s a lil call to action to comment on Fremont’s fucked up new ordinance.
As cities across the country move towards arrests, citations, and forced displacement policies for our unhoused residents, in the place of any coherent strategy toward housing, Fremont proposes to take it a step further, by also criminalizing care for our neighbors. Whether you are a non-profit outreach worker, a mutual aid collective, or church or family group doing distribution, this new law allows local law enforcement to turn your work into a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. This is the type of work that keeps our neighbors fed, clothed, sheltered, and loved while facing some of the worst days of their lives. It should be protected, not intimidated and criminalized.
Tomorrow at 7pm, Fremont City Council will attempt to pass this ordinance on the Consent Calendar. You can reach out and let them know that the eyes of Californians are on their cruel policy making! Follow the instructions below for Public Comment. It is Item 2.C on the 7/11/25 agenda.
- Email councilmeetings@fremont.gov by the deadline noted on the agenda (actually was unclear on agenda, so asap!), the day of the meeting.
- Please identify the agenda item number and meeting date in the subject line of your email or specify that it is not related to an agenda item.
- Emails will be compiled into files by agenda item number, distributed to the City Council and staff, and published in the City’s Agenda Center on www.fremont.gov.
- If you wish to share an attachment/exhibit, submit the pdf formatted document(s) to the email above by the noted deadline.
Attached is the draft ordinance, and the agenda can be found here. And you can view the meeting live here.
We’ve already seen a local uptick in Sheriff harassment of those helping the unhoused community. It should not stand here and should not be allowed to become law in Fremont! We know what happens in one municipality spreads to the others. Helping each other survive is essential work, not a crime!
