Camp Resolution to Stay Open!
Lease remains in effect as Water Board extends zoning variance.
Sacramento Homeless Union lawsuit, community pressure and solidarity of Camp residents defeat City’s attempt to gut historic agreement.
Yesterday, May 28, 2024, Dr. Matthew Buffleben, Supervising Engineer for the Central Valley Regional Water Board, wrote to the Sacramento Homeless Union to confirm that a longstanding zoning variance at Camp Resolution set to expire on June 1st will now be extended and remain in place beginning this Friday, May 31, 2024.
Two months ago, the City of Sacramento used the variance issue as a pretext for unilaterally and illegally terminating the Lease which, by its express terms, guarantees that Camp Resolution cannot be closed until all Camp residents have been placed in “individual, durable, permanent housing.”
Despite the City’s pressure and numerous false public statements, the Homeless Union, lessee Safe Ground Sacramento and Camp residents refused to “come to the table” unless the Notice of Lease Termination was first rescinded.
“We will not negotiate with a Panocoles hanging over our heads,” says Union President Crystal Sanchez. “We held firm, we organized, we sued and we won.”
But, says Sanchez, “This fight is not over.”
“The City has been sabotaging Camp Resolution from the beginning. Police have failed to protect the residents and have allowed criminals and trespassers to remain on the premises. The City failed to provide the full complement of trailers required under the Lease and we have been denied basic survival necessities like water and electricity that all Sacramento communities are entitled to receive.
“Now with this victory, we are taking the offensive: going forward with our breach of contract lawsuit, tightening up the organization of the Camp, getting rid of the disruptive, criminal and opportunist elements, and making sure the City never again tries to close this Camp until it has kept is promise of full housing.”
