You Are Cordially Invited to: Human Rights 101-Housing as a Human Right

July 9, 2021 by Jonathan Leave a Comment

Dear family, friends and acquaintances;

You are cordially invited to help me celebrate a dream come true…Thanks to Bronx Defenders and former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right To Adequate Housing, Leilani Farha and the organization she founded, The Shift— you are invited to join a Human Rights 101 training and discussion. As a community organizer and activist, I was introduced to human rights law and international human rights mechanisms and treaties by Cathy Albisi and Tiffany Gardner, the former executive director and Human Right to Housing director, at the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative now known as Partners for Dignity and Rights. The learning continued as a long time member of the US Human Rights Network.

One of the mechanisms of human rights that supported communities and lifted up their struggles is UN Special Rapporteurs. From 2014-2020, I had the pleasure of working closely with Leilani Farha as the Rapporteur on housing from her visit to Detroit at the start of her mandate to the end— with the release of the documentary film PUSH. Ms. Farha has tirelessly worked with communities around the world to shift us from talking about the right to housing to making the right to housing a reality. Please join us for the opening in a series of training and conversations around the human right to housing and beyond. Future training in the series will include many of the people that have helped me build my foundational understanding of human rights and international human rights law.  The opening event will take place Tuesday July 13th from 11am-1:00pm EDST. Special thanks to Julieta Perucca and Leilani Farha (the Shift) and Siya Hedge and Gillian Stoddard Leatherbury (Bronx Defenders).

We could write a whole article on the shit storm that has hit at the federal level and then reel off reactionary oppressive measures that local and state governments are imposing in response to the massive numbers of people they know damn well are going to be dying, suffering, hurting, living in the streets — and be mad as hell. https://conta.cc/4iWZe2j
