SWEEPS this week started on Wednesday 6/3/21 at 21st and California right outside of Urban Peak (I thought the city wanted unhoused residents to connect to services?). One resident was threatened with arrest when the garbage truck driver accused her of spitting on him. The resident was very agitated and upset, dealing with a life threatening physical condition, and had nearly lost her voice. She was inadvertently releasing little spit molecules as she struggled to communicate. After some advocacy with DPD, she was not arrested and was able to freely leave the area. Approximately 25 people were traumatically displaced to neighboring blocks.
SWEEPS continued on Thursday 6/3/21 at 21st and Welton where 5 tents were located. There was minimal work for EHS and DOTI as there was very little trash at this camp (which prompts the question of where is the public hazard?) and it was all over and done with by 10am. Approximately 10 people were traumatically displaced. SWEEPS don’t solve homelessness! Homelessness ends with housing. Until we can procure enough affordable, safe and accessible housing we need to plan for our unhoused! It is irresponsible not to! Everybody poops! We march onward towards Rights, Dignity, Housing….
