This week SWEEPS started on Tuesday 5/11 and Wednesday 5/12 at S. Lipan and W. Wesley. Approximately 25 people in tents and RVs were traumatically displaced.
On Wednesday 5/12 the city switched to 5am SWEEPS citing that they need more time for “cleanups” but when they arrived late on Wednesday morning there was no one to SWEEP.
On Thursday 5/13/21 at S. Pecos and Arizona, Lipan and Louisiana, EHS arrived late again and there was no trash to pick up. Supervisor Adam Abeyta rolled in like a rockstar and sped away 5 minutes later on his motorcycle. Some community volunteers chipped in and coordinated tows for 3 vehicles/rvs. One RV was too large and District 4 Community Liaison Officer Chavez had it towed with DPD funds.
Even with safe parking spaces, there are currently no spaces in the area that allow for RV camping. This needs to change. Homelessness ends with housing. Until we can procure enough affordable, safe and accessible housing we need to plan for our unhoused! It is irresponsible not to! We march onward towards Rights, Dignity, Housing….
