The day after the Homeless Advisory Meeting we saw our 21st SWEEP (traumatic displacement equivalent to experiencing a natural disaster in trauma load) of 2021. This SWEEP traumatically displaced approximately 20 residents on 4th and Kalamath. Once again, the city was overly aggressive in the use of the fencing, placing the fencing out into the street endangering the safety of residents exercising their right to document the actions of their government.
SWEEPING people does not work! We heard yesterday from the city that they are working on building 254 affordable housing units in the next 21 months. Great… but what about the 31,000 individuals who passed through the Homeless Management Information System this year? It is irresponsible to not plan for 31,000 residents. Housed, business, and unhoused agree that we need the city to provide hand washing, trash pickup and somewhere to pee and poop for humans! No one should have to live in a tent. We fight onward towards Rights, Dignity and Housing…
