Novato CA – A week after a person was caught on camera slashing tents in a Novato homeless encampment, unhoused community members and supporting activists are camping outside of Novato City Hall and displaying 6 slashed tents that were destroyed at Camp Ambition.
Police are refusing to investigate hidden cameras that were trained on the camp that were discovered last night at the camp. This is part of a long saga of harassment against Camp Ambition since it was set up on December 18th as part of a campaign to turn the property into a shared equity housing cooperative. On December 23rd, police served evictions to the camp and a camper had their vans tires slashed. On Christmas eve two tents were slashed. One Dec 29th a camper was followed to their dad’s home and had their tire slashed as well. On the 30th tents were skunked and slashed again. On January 3rd the slashing was caught on camera by a trail cam set up by supporters.

The protest led by the Tamalpais Equity Campaign (TEC) are demanding that City Manager Adam McGill respond to their request to meet about violence against unhoused people by community members and police. TEC is creating a coalition to turn the property into a shared equity housing cooperative that would allow currently unhoused people to own their own homes while the land would be owned by a community land trust. They are also demanding that attacks from the police and people in the community be reigned in, and that mobile showers be brought to Camp Compassion in Downtown Novato – a camp with around 20 people that was swept by Adam McGill back in July.
