We approach all our work from a human rights perspective. The US clearly has the resources to provide housing, food, clothing, and medical care for everyone living here. This fact isn’t in dispute. What is disputed is that people have a basic right to these necessities, and whether the collective wealth of our society should be shared by all or hoarded by a few. In a democratic system of checks and balances, social welfare policies are the essential check on economic markets. No system of economic markets on its own ensures human rights and well being for all. Housing is a human right. Until we recognize this principle, we will not end homelessness in the United States. Once we commit to ensuring that all people have a roof over their head, the legislation, the policies, and the funding allocations will follow. |
