WRAP actively produces knowledge and visuals that breathe life and energy into our campaigns. We work against the stereotypical portrayals used by the corporate media and chambers of commerce, government, social service agencies, and nonprofits that dehumanize homeless and poor people. WRAP artists have created a visual language that challenges this dehumanizing imagery. The posters and artwork we use in our campaigns and reports inspire people to think deeper about the root causes of poverty and homelessness. Rather than triggering repulsion, apathy, or guilt, they inspire collective action. Six of our seven members have street newspapers with a monthly circulation of 75,000. We’ve developed a regionwide media response network to disrupt and counter dehumanizing and stereotypical portrayals in corporate media. Without Housing has been downloaded over 35,000 times since it was published in 2006. By presenting extensive research in our own voice and through art charts, we touched a nerve and validated what thousands of homeless people, frontline service providers, and community organizers had been thinking for a long time. It validated their lived experience, instincts, and feelings, and presented a clear framework of the problem and solution. Knowledge and art are only powerful when they are creatively put into action. WRAP pushes a social justice and human rights message in public forums, the media, national homeless networks, legislative hearings, and trains organizers and advocates on how to use our media, reports, and artwork as organizing and critical consciousness tools that move people toward effective strategies and action. |
