Homeless carted out of Cape Town and Johannesburg for World Cup

wholethingSouth African cities are planning to create “concentration camps” to house thousands of poor people well away from the football stadiums where next year’s World Cup will be staged, charities say.

Human rights groups in Cape Town and Johannesburg have expressed outrage at leaked plans to clear the streets of the homeless during the tournament. Councils in Johannesburg and Durban have told charities that street children and the destitute will be “compassionately” relocated out of city centres from next month. (more…)

S.F.’s parking meters for homeless at the ready

mollerRemember Mayor Gavin Newsom’s idea to install 10 “homeless meters” along Market Street and Van Ness Avenue? The idea, proposed in May 2008, was to discourage people from giving to panhandlers by offering a way to donate spare change to organizations that help the homeless.

Homeless advocates blasted the program, saying it was mean-spirited and silly, and the meters were never installed. But it turns out the idea got a lot further in Room 200 than most people realized. (more…)

Chaos reigns at Detroit aid event

detroitThousands of people swarmed Cobo Hall in chaos this morning trying to get applications for housing and utility payment assistance from the city of Detroit.

People fainted, others fought as the Detroit Police Gang Unit tried to keep people in line - some since last night - and in check.

“It’s a disaster here,” former assistant Detroit Police chief and city council candidate Gary Brown said, handing out water. “This is dangerous. Very unorganized, very dangerous.”

The City of Detroit Planning & Development Department was to pass out 5,000 applications to those standing in line. But a line of people snaking back and forth inside Cobo, down Washington Boulevard and around the corner to the circular parking deck far outnumbered the applications available. (more…)

After 15 more arrests, homeless campsite still not resolved

annechadwickwilliamsSacramento police arrested 15 more homeless people Saturday at a vacant lot just north of downtown. The campers were released the same day, and some soon returned to the lot that is morphing from a campground into a battleground.

Saturday’s arrests followed at least a half-dozen such raids where police have cited and rousted from 15 to 35 people who have occupied the lot at 1221 C St. since a local attorney opened the site to the homeless on Aug. 21.

Police say the campers are violating an ordinance that prohibits urban camping for longer than 24 hours. The homeless campers say they want a legal “safe ground” with basic services such as garbage pickup and portable toilets. (more…)
